Vedic Astrology and the Ethical Question in 'Faust' and 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'

The theme in Faust and Dorian Gray is literary, while a study of the quest for knowledge and experience can be existential.

The point for consideration would then be - Is karma ethical, or capable of having consistent quality. It is like asking if Life itself is ethical. It is quite different from examining whether a given life (the life of person) is ethical or not.

Karma is a-ethical.  Life is a-ethical. But different Karmic and life experiences result ‘only’ from ethical difference in past action. So difference in experience results only from difference in action.

Can action be controlled to the extent of deciding its ethics categorically, given the heavy component of determinism in Karma, and given the nature of human existence.

'Selling your soul' in literature might equate to abandoning the Ātmakāraka (AK) in the chart. Can the Atmakaraka be abandoned, or is it the texture of the Atmakaraka itself which is leading to categorization by human beings.

The literary premise in Faust and the Picture of Dorian Gray may be existentially flawed to that extent, though artistically attractive. It gives all energy to individual choice and further posits that a particular inflexion of existence is necessarily tainted.

One feels that greatness as understood in common parlance, cannot but be tainted from this perspective. Existence is taint. Moksha (Mokṣa) is freedom from taint.

There is a false pretence in all ethical recrimination, for it comes from human beings. It can truly come only from God, perhaps through human beings, and does.

Existence is action. Moksha must be a variant, or summation of inaction. Unbridled and overpowering spirituality therefore comes with conventional tests.  Spirituality will then be to exist with awareness of the taint of existence. This will pressure but spirituality is not turning away from the taint, or only the distant ascetic will be spiritual.

Spiritual and great = Torn to shreds by knowledge

Great and non-spiritual = Condemned to ignorance

Not great and spiritual = Moving Towards release (Sattwa)

Not great and not spiritual = Nothing (Tamas)

The subject can also be studied from a perspective of corruption of the Rajas Guna.

Restraint comes from the fear of the stick (of God) or reluctance stemming from knowledge, without fear of the type discussed in the preceding proposition, but with awareness of consequent Karmic experience.
This must be construed with respect to the grand design qualified by the temporal hue of Yugas, and Kalpas.

The core factor is the major difference between the thought of the East, with its focus on destiny, and that of the West with its focus on free-will.

Some stalwarts of greatness are Ashoka (Aśoka) the Great, Alexander the Great, Chenghiz Khan. This is virtually undisputed. Can we say that greatness carries, at least on occasion, a measure of terribleness.

A conscious deliberation on the subject must be cognizant of the distinction in focus and perspective in thought that emanates from the East and the West respectively.

Another important point is that the immediate, albeit simplistic and troublesome ethical polarity of the West in the opposites of God and Satan, is absent in Indian mysticism. There is no Satan here. The Hindu is at peace because of this absence of diametric tension in the personality.

But he is also at risk, because now, social structuring having become very different, he is not curtailed from any amount of width in individual action. In other words, while he is not required to sell his soul to attain magnificence and greatness at any velocity whatsoever, owing to a fundamental absence of a purchaser of the soul, he is virtually free and unbridled, subject only to the restraints of a knowledgeable consciousness, as noted above in this paper.

With or without a purchaser, can the soul be bought and sold. Parashara (Parāśara) teaches that the Atmakaraka (Ātmakāraka)  is the King of the horoscope, being the temporal significator of the soul in any incarnation. Whatever the king decides shall happen, and he cannot be made subject to such whims. He can dictate such whims, and in a scenario where he associates with the Upachaya Bhavas (Upacaya Bhāvas) it will appear as if the individual has either decided, or refrained from doing something, in respect of what is being discussed.

Conceptually, the Atmakaraka being the planet farthest advanced by degrees in the horoscope, is not associated with empirical action. The Ātmakāraka is the soul, and the soul is not empirical but metaphysical.

Therefore, the literary premise of Faust and The Picture of Dorian Gray, does not hold existential validity in the traditional matrix of Vedic Astrology.

Ethics of action will be decided from benefices and malefics. Benefices are ethically good while some malefics are definitely ethically bad.

The Sun is a malefic but is a Sattwa Guna (Guṇa) Graha, that which sustains with light. It stands both for the Universal Soul and the Individual soul. Its flaw is of burning and cruelty when afflicted, a callous royalty that crushes the oppressed. But the crushed oppressed are themselves represented by the great malefic, Saturn. This is how they get to be the crushed oppressed in the first place. While poverty is an evil for those who suffer it, it cannot be considered an ethical evil for those who do not suffer it. It is thought to promote an urge for crime, owing to want and deprivation. It is for this reason that 'neighbourhoods' are classified and also the reason for addresses being such a major thing. Insofar as exclusion, lowliness, want and deprivation lead to criminality (afflicted Saturn), this position is an ethical negative.

There is, however, nothing to suggest that nobility and greatness cannot emerge out of lack and poverty; on the contrary they often do. The motivation for striving and effort comes from wanting to have that which one does not have. Even otherwise, setbacks, problems and conventional negatives, foster spiritual positives which are desirable in the grand scheme of things. Saturn can being asceticism and adherence to orthodox philosophy.

We find then that a Sattwa Guna malefic like Sun and a Tamas Guna malefic like Saturn can occupy altering locations on the ethical prism based on strength and dignity in the horoscope.

Both the Sun and Saturn can beget cruelty and the highest spiritual detachment. It is very much a matter for sustained examination from the various charts in the horoscope, not least the Shashthyamsha (Śaṣṭhyāmśa) (D-60).

Other notable points are that good and bad in ethics are often contingent on the Desha, Kala, Patra (Deśa, Kāla, Pātra) continuum.

Could an ethical construct be social or must it be metaphysical, especially in a spiritual reference like that of Vedic astrology. Afflicted benefics appear to be far worse than malefics on this score as it involves an unpalatable transformation of something good into bad, the Moon and Mercury under affliction being a case in point. A Śrāpa or curse combination, or a severe Tithi Doṣa (Dosha) can turn everything into a living hell though there are secrets and intricacies and flip sides here as well.

In all this where is the scope of the wilderness of the free will, which might go on and partake hugely of the sentiment of buying and selling, of the literary and perhaps philosophical West.

We also should note at this junction that natural malefics as the Atmakaraka usually show a high level of spiritual advancement – this is a rule of thumb. Peculiarities abound, such as in a scenario of the hedonistic Rahu becoming Ātmakāraka, showing shocks at the hands of the populace at large and yet carrying on like a babe in the woods- an unyielding directive of the soul.

Even if Rahu (Rāhu) is not the Ātmakāraka, where it should aspect the Ārūḍha Lagna (Arudha Lagna), especially from the 12th House from Ārūḍha Lagna, it will force spirituality on the human being because detests the shining, social, moneyed Ārūḍha Pada. Interaction in the created world is quite likely to being deceit, shock, lying and cheating. One is then compelled to probe beneath the veneer.

In summation then, one can say that such simplistic and reductive ethical propositions may be used as a literary device but do not necessarily have existential import. Action is to be judged on the touchstone of Karma and even its culminating result is found in the Punya Chakra, and not in a table of empirical debit and credit.

Vedic Astrology Transit Moon in Cancer on June 20, 2015

A Positive and supportive Vedic yoga is happening in Cancer (Karkata Rashi or Karkaṭa Rāśi) on June 20, 2015 where the two great benefics Jupiter (Guru or Gurū)  and Venus (Shukra or Śukra) are joined the Moon (Chandra or Cañdra) in transit.
This Dwi-Guru Yoga- a combination of the yoking of Jupiter and Venus is celebrated for a reason. The name comes from the fact that both Jupiter and Venus are preceptors, albeit of opposite camps. When the two preceptors come together in conjunction or mutual aspect, Dwi - Guru Yoga results.
Jupiter governs spiritual and esoteric knowledge. It is very metaphysical and somewhat other-worldly. This is also apparent from the fact that the planet rules the Akasha (Ākāśa) Tattwa or the Ether element amongst the primordial substances. Akasha Tattwa is not visible and is not amenable to the tactile quality. Yet it is the quality which binds all other elements, and binds everything in existence in general. The flower encapsulates this quality, and it is no surprise that flowers are exchanged both by lovers and by devotees because the desire is to bind and be bound to the beloved. In Bhakti Yoga, beloved is none other than God.
Venus, the other perceptor is the diamond-eyed with great attention to detail. It has no time for this lofty matrix but is preoccupied with empirical and mundane Knowledge, the be-all of school, college and working life. For Venus, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. In this focus and emphasis on the world of matter and experience, Venus wants us to forget its own highest asceticism, through which he obtained the Mrityunjaya Mantra (Mṛtyuṅjaya Mañtra), that which has the power to revive the dead. Death and debility, for this reason, have no better cure than Venus. For this teacher, the MBA and the LL.B. and the MBBS are where it all is, and time is not to be wasted will the Problem of Evil and so on.

When these two come together, especially in the natal horoscope, in the manner as aforesaid, all knowledge of Heaven and Earth becomes available to the person. There is every possibility that the person will be renowned for his knowledge. There are some other implications of this combination but these can be kept for another occasion.

At this time, we may, however, also reflect on the Dhimantaha (Dhīmaṅtaḥa) Yogas which show a great flowering of the intellect but though a process of natural growth which comes from exertion as a matter of habit. If these Yogas coexist with the Dwi–Guru Yoga then we will never have the sad situation of a person being blessed with these combinations, and yet allowing them to lay dormant. They will be activated when the working intelligence of discrimination consciously works with these boons in an organized manner.

So, now we know what this transit combination in Cancer basically means.

I have said before that Cancer is one of the most benefic signs of the zodiac, being the auspicious 4th house from the ascendant of the Kalapurusha (Kālapuruṣa). It is also the exaltation sign of the greatest benefic in the zodiac, Jupiter, and that, of course, says a great deal. In other words, as the Moon joins the two benefics, it is an exalted Jupiter and its own sign (Moon rules Cancer), which provide it guidance, comfort and illumination.

People will therefore feel accordingly because apart from what has been said, the Moon is also an agent of fructification. This is the reason that we map the forays of the mind to the movement of the planet in the various signs.

Apart from the Dwi-Guru Yoga, other combinations are formed namely the Gajakesari Yoga and the Annapurna Yoga. The Gajakeśarī Yoga is a highly auspicious combination yielding fame, success and accolades while Venus and Moon join to bring material wealth and all things that glitter. It also brings sating and fulfilment which can only come with personal abundance, to whatever degree it may extend.

This is a heady, grounded, justifiably optimistic and favourable time and since it is also free from damaging malefic aspects and conjunctions, people would do well do use this destined support wisely and to the utmost.

Vedic Astrology and the Business of Living

In our business, which is the business of living, there are things which impede and there are things which further.

The impediment is not to be trifled with. It does exist and none of us need to be reminded because we know it. It would be easy to get overpowered by the impediment without even knowing what it is or worse still, that it is.

It is equally easy to get cosy with the notion that all is well with the world because sometimes there is apparently nothing to worry about and things appear to be on course all on their own.

Both are quite dangerous.

But we may not be in either situation but in one which most conscious people find themselves- in the pushes and pulls of the positive and the negative, given above.

But we know that the impeding negative is described as such because it is precisely that, and for that reason devastating in its results.

It is often a situation of great desperation or total darkness which leads to faith, spirituality. There is nowhere else to go. And as it turns out later, there is no better place in the world to go to than to spiritual high ground.

In Vedic Astrology the impeding negative can take various forms. The most universal of which is Saturn or Śani (Shani), the significator of bad Karma which thwarts all. This is its job- to put a spanner in the works, preferably to an extent which entails there being no works at all to talk about. Or which is the same thing, the Sisyphus toil, the donkey’s work which leaves nothing but the burden and its fatigue.

It would be easy to say that the will should be strengthened to an extent where all this is nothing before the Man. But this is not existentially true. The forces of Nature are larger than us but there is a balance in Nature. For the negative, there is a corresponding positive.

It is not only Saturn but all natural malefics who can take on this role of keeping us from realising our true goals and objectives in life.  This immediately includes Mars (Mangala), Rahu, Ketu and the Sun (Surya) and also the afflicted Moon and Mercury (Budha).

Saturn of course impedes and riddles our path with difficulties and obstacles leading always to great sorrow and depression while someone like Rahu will work as a flash and shock the wits out of us. Ketu is the great nothingness which convinces us that the end result of everything will be nullity and it is all a great, big mistake while Mars threatens with violent opposition and accidents.

The Sun burns us from within and either authority mistreats us or we feel mistreated as authoritative figures by the pedestrian reality around us. When the benefics turn, it is even more problematic, the mind and maternal figures in the case of the Moon, and the legal tender and relatives in case of Mercury- whenever we utter we receive brickbats.

But this is general and we can have any planet, say, lording the Dusthana or the evil houses from the Ascendant (Lagna) playing this role.

Since the play of life is mostly acted out in a social and financial setting, some adverse locations from the Ārūḍha Lagna can very strongly give this result.

The hope is always with the benefics Jupiter and Venus (Guru and Shukra) and the un-afflicted Mercury as too the bright Śukla Pakṣa Cañdra (Shukla Paksha Chandra).

But who is telling us all this with so much clarity and timeless wisdom which transcends entire Yugas and more. It is Vedic astrology (Jyotiṣa) as seen through the eyes of the adept Brahmin.

What if one flounders in this destined roller-coaster without a clue as to the very existence, and then the nature of the cosmic dramatis personae. What if the unrecognised and the untreated (un-remedied) malefic damages the human character so much that there is no spirit left to fight back with. What if the level of ignorance is so much that one places trust in the wrong quarters to learn only too late that reliance was on something no better than a transient figment of the imagination.

These are possibilities that must be facts in a great number of lives. The blackness of that experience is truly something to eschew.

We are here to fulfil a potential and to make this play interesting that journey has been made quite difficult. This is the backbone of universal human experience. It is not an absolute pre-requisite to have the pillars of great spirituality like Vedic astrology in life so as to achieve or even begin to strive but research into this aspect will reveal a support system which is no less, whatever it may be. Without it sustained life of significance is not possible.

One finds achievement, but there is so much vulnerability and ignorance at its back that it becomes virtually toothless and almost comic, definitely ironic. The contours of life will have their way in any case but to be a man is to know.

Maybe not in the beginning, or even while doing the work that life demands of us as unique and precious individuals, but definitely at some point in the journey.

Vedic astrology is high up there in the scheme of things for the same reason that people searched out, and continue to find, India. There are things here which are nowhere else and perhaps nobody needs them more than us because we live (again) in very important times where things change at incredible speed and yet nothing at all has changed at our core.

Let this distance not defeat us inwardly. Let us keep pace, ironically with one of the oldest wisdoms known to mankind. It’s always going to be too early for the ultimate truth, but let it not be too late for the penultimate truth which is what this is.

When I write briefly about the Jupitertransit, what I am doing is accentuating the positive influence that planet Earth and its inhabitants feel with the movement of this greatest benefic.

When I write about the Saturn transit, and here and here too, I am dealing with the changing focus of one of the most challenging forces in life.

But what we truly need to do is to know ways of breaking free of the shackles of negativity and things which hold us back, and these can be quite seductive in their rationality at times. We are all keyed up to conquer worlds but we feel childish in saying so because of these missing links within. When I work and consult astrologically with peoplefrom across the world in a variety of ways, one of the major themes is to clearly and without demur identify the malefic forces that are impeding, remedying them metaphysically and behaviourally and then knowing and strengthening the forces that are all there to aid us in our journey to where we are intended to go.

We need to carry out this exercise in any way we think best, whether it is through the ancient wisdom of the Ṛṣis or through some other avenue. There is usually no time to lose, irrespective of the point in the journey one is at, because we have covered all there is, at the stage of defining the themes that rule.
