Tom Hanks- A Vedic Astrology Horoscope Analysis

This is a Vedic astrology horoscope analysis of Tom Hanks, born Thomas Jeffrey Hanks, one of the most popular, accomplished and highest grossing actors in the Hollywood film industry. He even has an asteroid named after him!

The Vedic horoscope mirrors the Karma that each individual experiences and it is in this that the true relevance of Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa is revealed since each contemporary moment reveals how it is informed by the metaphysical design so astutely encapsulated in the rules enunciated by the Ṛṣis of India. (See- http://planetarytransformation.blogspot.in/2015/02/the-essential-profundity-of-and.html and http://planetarytransformation.blogspot.in/2006/08/choose-chart-analysis-you-want.html)

Birth data-

Tom Hanks was born on July 9, 1956 at 11:17 AM in Concord, California, USA. The birth data has an AA rating at Louis Rodden’s Astrodatabank indicating that the birth data is very accurate.

Fame, Accolades and Acclaim-

We need to see as to how, if at all, the Rāśi Chakra reflects the tremendous fame and popularity as well as excellence in the chosen realm, which are all hallmarks of Hanks’ life.

The Rāśi Chakra of Tom Hanks’ horoscope is extracted below-

Lagna/ Ascendant and the lord of the Lagna/ Lagneśa are indicative of name and fame as they are the self of the individual. The great fame and popularity and even the excellence as an actor simply must be reflected from this one determinant.

We find that Virgo/Kanyā/Kanya Lagna/ Ascendant rises in the Rāśi Chakra and the lord of the Lagna Budha/Mercury is in the 10th House of Karmā in Siddha Yoga which transliterates into a combination for skill and attainment which entail followers.

Mercury is the archetypal student and therefore the Dhī or the intelligence in Tom Hanks, as a matter of Karmā, is attuned to learning in perpetuity.

On excellence as an actor, and also specifically on the leadership role amongst Hollywood actors we need to look at the dominant Yoga formed by the conjunction/ Yuti of Budha and Sūrya/ the Sun in the 10th Bhāva from the Lagna. This is the Budha Āditya Yoga or the Nipuṇa Yoga which leads to dexterity and intellectual attainment. It is in a Vāyu/ Air sign and that too in one owned by the Lagneśa Budha!

Special blessings-

Budha/Mercury being in the 10th House in the information oriented sign of human expression is forming a Siddha Yoga as stated but also results in the special blessings as stated below-

i.      Bhadra Mahāpuruṣa/ Mahapurusha Yoga- When Mercury is in its own sign/ Rāśi in Keṅdra/ quadrant from the Lagna it forms the Bhadra Mahapuruṣa Yoga. In this case Budha is also the Lagna lord and so one’s own exertions and intellect are leading to the blessings of the Yoga. The word Bhadra indicates refinement and accomplishment both. Hanks is known to say that work and family comprise his life.

Budha governs the relatives and Hanks will always take care of the family and even the extended family. He will also be genuinely likeable and will ensure that he gives his admirers and fans the attention that they need from him.

The word Mahāpuruṣa means a ‘great man’ who achieves things of acclaim and magnitude and so we can see quite easily that he has always been meant to do great things in life as a consequence of his own excellence in the chosen line of work.

ii.  Sūrya in Digbala-

The Sun has 100% directional strength in the 10th House as this is where the King enjoys being the most- on his throne. The Lagna and the 10th House both indicate the throne and for the Lagneśa Budha (ruler of the throne) to be in the 10th House (throne) and the King, the Sun to be in the 10th House join forces and lead to iconic status in the film industry.

The Sun in Digbala makes for genuine leadership and also a measure of spirituality as Sūrya is the main Kāraka of the 9th House of Dharma. Hanks follows Greek Orthodox Christianity and goes to Church and says ‘when he goes to Church he really goes to Church’ musing on the mysteries of life.

The real manifestation of Tom Hanks, the human being-

The Bhāvas from the Lagna, one frequently writes, indicate the tremendous source pools of Kārmic metaphysics which may or may not be reflected in the actual life events. These latter are studied from the Ārūḍha/ Arudha Cakra drawn from the Ārūḍha Lagna.

The Ārūḍha Lagna in the Rāśi Chakra of Tom Hanks is in the 4th Bhāva from the Lagna which is in the sign Sagittarius/Dhanuṣa/ Dhanusha. The deep religious impulse in Hanks comes from this sign because it indicates the battlefield and also the spiritual battlefield where Hanks admittedly muses on the mystery of life and ‘why bad things happen to good people’ and ‘good things happen to bad people’.

He has said he was a Bible-toting evangelical in his early years and painfully shy. The 4th House is that which is hidden and the 10th is that where a native shines and this is the contrast between the two. Also, informed readers may look for more information on this website relating to the unstable Ārūḍha Lagna which entails leaving one’s associates for an entirely different set.

How Tom Hanks is perceived is a different matter as the Dwāra or the doorway in the 7th from the Ārūḍha Lagna is much stronger with Mercury and Sun as discussed above in this article and dominates the popular perception.

Tom Hanks draws his power from his relative seclusion with his family as the Ārūḍha Lagna is in the 4th House which is the home. However, there is a crucial balance to be maintained as the Lagneśa or the active intelligence rests in its 7th and left too long the fire can get quenched and not taken up at all can lead to a burn out as the 10th House shows ceaseless work.

Miscellany-

Reflect a moment on films such as You’ve Got Mail which is centred on his Lagneśa Budha which governs emails and publishing or Turner and Hooch which is based on pets, this being a signification of Virgo being the natural 6th House of the zodiac.

Cast Away (abandonment) is from the 12th House of self-negation where the usual environment of the body, the Lagna is lost. Philadelphia, is rooted in AIDS coming from different sexuality as the 7th Lord Jupiter is in the 12th House (hospitals) and the 12th Lord Sun is in Digbala leading to awards and accolades in such roles.

Marriage-

Tom Hanks would not have married at all, let alone twice but something intervened and this intervention is known in the slightly advanced sections of Vedic astrology studies.

The Naisargika Kāraka/Natural Significator for marriage is Venus/ Śukra is in the 9th House which is a good placement but it is joined Ketu which tends to nullify everything in the extant realm. Venus is in its own sign Taurus/ Vṛṣabha and very strong. Why then do we suspect that he would have not gotten married at all.

Firstly, Venus isunder a serious curse or Śrāpa which inflicts great suffering and especially in the significations of the benefic planet which is afflicted in the curse. Śani/ Shani/ Saturn and Rāhu/ Rahu are joined in the 3rd House and that too in Scorpio/ Vṛṣcika and aspect the Venus-Ketu Yoga with Graha Driṣṭi/planetary aspect.

As if this were not enough, Maṅgala/ Mars aspects from the 6th Bhāva from the Lagna. This means a concentration of as many as four malefic planets on Venus!

However the curse happens in the 9th Bhāva from the Lagna which is the Bhāgya Sthāna and we can say that the acts in the immediately past life which invited the curse from the spouse or a sister or sister-in-law were not done with a bad intention. However the person cursing had significant spiritual merit and so the curse would have manifested in all its severity.

Venus, the Ātmakāraka/ Atmakaraka-

Śukra is also the Ātmakāraka in the chart and shows the suffering has to come through relationships. In private experience this would be a very significant part of Hanks’ experience as a human being as the Ātmakāraka is the significator of the soul with the agenda of ridding it of the past Karma which is a painful process.

Those close to him might be in the know of that fact that he would have been very close to the idea of renouncing marriage altogether what with his Catholic and Mormon family moorings, and more particularly as a result of the experiences which would have accrued due to these combinations.

Marriage and Yogas from the Ārūḍha Lagna-

The real reason, even more than the Curse of Venus, for apprehending want of marriage and even a want of the desire to get married is that Śukra is in the 6th Bhāva from the Ārūḍha Lagna. When a natural benefic is in the 6th Bhāva from the Ārūḍha Lagna and in strength, the person will renounce the significations of the planet.

Then why did Hanks not do so especially when Venus is in Taurus its own sign and therefore very strong.

Saved by the Navāmśa/ Navamsha Chakra-

Why Tom Hanks did not renounce the idea of marriage itself is due to the fact that Venus is Nīca/Neecha or debilitated in Virgo in the Navāmśa Chakra and conforms to the exception to the highlighted rule above. A planet in debility neutralises the indications and its ultimate weakness has been a blessing in disguise for him and has led him to being married twice.

The Navāmśa Chakra  is extracted below for reference-

Something else which helps him is the retrogression of Venus which makes the Ātmakāraka aspire to Scorpio where Venus is weak and thus salvaged from its poor location in the 6th from the Ārūḍha Lagna.

Kārmic Life-

There are visible things and there are invisible things. Hanks appears to be carrying significant Kārmic burden from the past lives as the Ātmakāraka is retrograde and involved in a curse. There will be burdens to carry and this is why he is so religious. With the Ātmakāraka in the 9th House the relief can only come from the temple (Church), the 9th House. the 8th Lord Mars is also involved and so arguments and friction could manifest in relationships. The debts will also have to be paid through the children as Saturn, the Kāraka of past Karma is the 5th Lord of the chart and aspects the Ātmakāraka.

Privately, Hanks experiences some very testing things as he perceives himself to be humbly placed in the grand scheme of things. It will help him to submit to God very easily as the Ātmakāraka Venus is debilitated (humility) in the Navāmśa Chakra. Also, the tests in the relationships, in marriage and at the soul level of things are amply indicated by the placement of the planet in the 6th Bhāva from the Lagna in the Navāmśa Chakra which is 12th from the 7th.

As an individual he gets knowledge, especially spiritual knowledge in very oppressed times, and has some areas to work on which he might be conscious of and which we do not propose to get into here.

Wealth-

Hanks’ enormous wealth is controlled by Mercury, which is the Naisargika Kāraka/Natural Significator for money and why this is so is again not capable of being discussed here in a public article.

When Mercury takes on the task of garnering money, he does a fantastic job of it due to the fact that it is the boss of this realm in any case.

Some better known Yogas reveal the auspiciousness of this aspect of his life. The 2nd Lord Venus showing movable wealth is in the house of fortune and the 11th Lord Moon is in its own Rāśi in the 11th Bhāva of gains. Tangible accruals are also seen in the Rāśi Dṛṣti of Jupiter, Venus, Ketu and Mars to the 11th Bhāva from the Ārūḍha Lagna.

The special Horā chart drawn to study matters pertaining to wealth reveals that Budha is exalted and the 2nd Lord of the Rāśi Chakra, Venus is in its own sign in Libra. The 2nd lord of the Horā chart forms the Gajakesarī Yoga with Jupiter.

Work and the Daśāmśa Chakra/ D-10 chart-

The Daśāmśa Chakra is given below-

The article even though intended to be fundamentally indicative has extended considerably and so let us seek to now wind up our study.

The Daśāmśa Chakra pertains to the specific of work and profession. Mercury is once again crucial and forms a tremendous combination with Gurū of the Bhagwad Gītā Yoga also known as the Gurū-Śiṣya Yoga indicating a tremendous propensity to learn. It also leads to fulfilment of all objectives as the blessings of Śrī Kṛṣṇa are there always.

Ketu in the 10th House can always lead to some of his works coming a cropper owing to bad choices but the 10th Lord Venus is joined Gurū in Dwi-Gurū Yoga- he has fantastic grounding and access to knowledge in both the spiritual and the mundane realm. (Consider choices such as The Da Vinci Code). The Yogakāraka for the Daśāmśa Chakra, Mars, is also joined the Yoga in the 3rd House which confirms the project specific nature of his work. His directorial ability, which veers towards the intellectual, has led to ‘That Thing You Do’ and ‘Larry Crowne’ but as Jupiter is weak in Libra, it has not led to the sort of acclaim that he is used to as an actor. Mercury and Venus are excellently placed in Libra.

Works such as Forrest Gump show the fundamental ability to play special characters with Saturn afflicting the Moon in the Lagna and further the Lagna Lord Sun in the D-10 chart being in exchange with Saturn. He has magnificent output in these sort of roles which has something out of the ordinary in their make-up by way of challenges.

A study such as this illustrates the extent to which Vedic astrology can tap into and illuminate contemporary life. See available options for private and privileged consulting at- http://planetarytransformation.blogspot.in/2006/08/choose-chart-analysis-you-want.html.

A BRIEF LOOK AT THE TWELVE LAGNAS/ ASCENDANTS IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

People are often curious at the beginning of their astrological quest, to know something of the various facets pertaining to their ‘chart’; in other words, they wish to evaluate the basic propensities pertaining to their Lagnas and their Rashi/ Lagna Kundalis (Kundalis). Also, the Chandra Lagna itself and Gochar furnish other popular areas of curiosity. Lagna is the sign rising on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth and is occupied by a Rāśi (Rashi)/ Vedic sign. The average duration of a sign rising in the Lagna/ Ascendant is two hours and for this reason the twelve Rāśis cover the twenty-four hours duration of the solar day. ( Basic Jyotiṣa principles can be accessed by clicking this link ) Lagna imbues a person with individuality and therefore denotes the self and the personality of the person. It is the first house or Bhāva of the chart and is the commencement point of any horoscopic study. We cannot forget that in all the divisional charts as well there is a Lagna/ asc

A METHODOLOGY FOR VEDIC CHART INTERPRETATION

The following is an attempt to lay down a general method to conduct professional chart analysis. It appears to have worked well for the author in his practice. Notably though, it need not be the best way to interpret charts and the astrologer must find her own way when it comes to developing a structure with which to unravel any given chart. Some of the more general features of interpretation are being omitted for fear of the paper becoming unwieldy but certain crucial aspects of Jyotish interpretation are being explained since these are not very widely used. The author is indebted to the works of Pt. Sanjay Rath, author, scholar and Jyotish Guru of Sri Jagannath Center. It is through assimilating the writings of Pt. Rath that the author has been able to progress from the fundamentals of Jyotish to a somewhat deeper understanding. ARUDHA PADAS: The houses as reckoned from the Lagna/ Ascendant reveal the truth about the native. This is metaphysical reality as distinguished from precipit

Yanavanta/ Annapurna/ Vahana Yoga of Venus and Moon in Scorpio-8th October, 2013

The Yānavaṅta/ Yanavanta/ Annapūrṇā/ Annapurna/ Vāhana/ Vahana Yoga is formed when Venus and Moon/ Śukra and Cañdra/ Shukra and Chandra associate to form a Yoga in the Vedic horoscope; by Vedic horoscope is meant the Rāśi Cakra/ Rashi Chakra and the Varga Chakra as well, the latter being the divisional charts governing specific areas of life such as marriage (Navāmśa/ Navamsha), career (Daśāmśa/ Dashamsha), children (Saptāmśa/ Saptamsha), parents and elders (Dwādaśāmśa/ Dwadashamsha), comforts and luxuries (Ṣodaśāmśa/ Shodashamsha), spirituality and worship (Vimśāmśa/ Vimshamsha), education (Siddhāmśa/ Siddhamsha) etc. Let us consider the immediate meanings of the various terms used to indicate the Yoga formed due to the association of Venus and the Moon. The term Yānavaṅta/ Yanavanta indicates the charioteer or one guiding the vehicle of humanity or a group or individuals. It indicates leadership and the capacity to show the way to the multitudes and to guide and mould their live
